When you go to Google searching for somewhere to leave your dog while you travel, several names come up: dog boarding, dog hotel, canine residence, dog lodging, accommodation. Are they different things or do they all mean the same?

In practice, they all describe the same service: a place where your dog spends one or more nights while you're away. What changes is the connotation and, in some cases, the type of establishment.

The names and where they come from

Dog boarding (pensión canina)

The oldest term and the one most used in Argentina. It comes from the traditional model: an establishment (sometimes a country house or home with space) that takes in several dogs and houses them for days or weeks. They usually have individual cages or boxes and common areas.

Dog hotel

A newer version of the same concept, with a more "boutique" connotation. It is sometimes used to differentiate premium establishments with greater individual attention, themed rooms or extra services (grooming, special walks, cameras so you can see your pet).

Canine residence

A more technical term, also used by establishments that present themselves as professional spaces for long stays. It is associated with country houses with large outdoor spaces.

Pet lodging / pet hosting

A generic term, equivalent to accommodation. It is used interchangeably.

Accommodation

The term we use at Woof! because it describes without ambiguity what happens: your pet stays somewhere while you're away. It has no connotation of "type of establishment", only of the service.

The traditional model vs. the new model

Historically, a dog boarding was a dedicated business: a shed, a country house or a home prepared to take in many pets at once. An "establishment"-style model.

In recent years another modality has emerged: private caregivers who host pets in their own homes, with a homey environment and more personalized care. It is the model of Woof! and similar platforms.

Neither is better than the other in absolute terms - it depends on the dog and the situation.

When does each one suit you?

A traditional boarding suits you if:

  • Your dog is very sociable and loves being with other dogs.
  • Your stay is very long (several weeks or months).
  • Your dog is very large and the boarding has specific infrastructure.
  • You're looking for a professional service with fixed schedules and standardized routines.

A private caregiver at home suits you if:

  • Your pet gets stressed in environments with many animals.
  • You want an environment more similar to your own home.
  • You're looking for personalized care and direct communication with whoever is looking after them.
  • Your dog is small or medium and needs company, not specific infrastructure.
  • It matters to you to know who they're with and to be able to see photos and messages during the stay.

What to look at before choosing, in any modality

  1. Real reviews: not the ones on the site itself, but reviews from previous customers. At Woof! each caregiver has verified reviews (only from people who booked).
  2. Space and modality: if they host at home, what is the environment like? If it's an establishment, are there outdoor spaces? How many animals do they take in at the same time?
  3. How they treat you in communication: the person who answers you has to inspire trust. If they take long to reply, are vague or don't give you details, it's not a good sign.
  4. Secure payment: never pay in advance outside of a platform. At Woof! the money is held and released when the service ends.
  5. What if something happens? Make sure you know what the caregiver or establishment does in case of a veterinary emergency.

How is it at Woof!?

Woof! is a platform of private caregivers (not establishments). Each caregiver is a person who hosts pets at their home or goes to the owner's home to care for them. What the platform ensures:

  • Identity verification for each caregiver.
  • Real reviews from customers who booked.
  • Secure payment held until the service ends.
  • Direct communication with the caregiver before and during the stay.
  • 12% commission on the price.

If what you're looking for is a homey environment with personalized care, this is the modality. If what you need is a large establishment with many animals at the same time, you'll have to look outside the platform.

In summary

  • Dog boarding, dog hotel, canine residence, lodging, accommodation: they all describe the same service (your pet spends the night in someone's care).
  • The real difference is not in the name but in the modality: dedicated establishment vs. private caregiver at home.
  • Each modality works best for different types of pets and needs.
  • In any case, what matters is trust, reviews and process transparency.
